SEO Link Building for Interior Pages

Are you concentrating all of your SEO link building activities on your home page? If so, read on.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, you might have noticed that more of your website’s interior pages have been getting listed in the search engine results pages. If you’re one of the unlucky ones, you might have noticed that you’ve lost a lot of ground as far as ranking for particular keywords.

You can blame it all on a few recent changes that Google made. Now please keep in mind, Google never comes right out and directly tells anyone exactly what their algorithms are. We basically have to compile our SEO techniques from various Google presentations and blog posts and speeches, etc.

So the opinion I’m about to share about SEO link building is simply that – my opinion. But it’s based on lots and lots of research and listening and reading and watching – oh yeah, and a little bit of spying. So here goes…

If you want to improve the search engine positioning of your website in general, you need to share the wealth as far as SEO link building goes. Let me explain:

Most webmasters, especially when they’re relatively new to marketing on the internet, concentrate on building links into their home page. And that can be difficult to do, since the home page of any website typically serves so many functions. It’s hard to turn the home page into the central authority on a very specific topic, especially if you offer a variety of products and services; so much of the SEO link building is, in effect, wasted. It’s definitely not advantageous to put all of your SEO link building eggs into one basket. If you’re focusing all of your incoming links onto only one page, what will happen if there is a change in the algorithms? If your page loses rankings due to algorithm changes, you have now lost 100{869e831eebb297205a40f5602b7d9a97903f2bdc29805b0d30adf410733c0ae1} of your SERPs listings.

What if the competition for that particular keyword phrase suddenly becomes very stiff – this is not unusual for seasonal searches, or in certain industries at certain times of the year. If you’re only concentrating on getting your home page listed, you could conceivably see your entire ranking (since there is only one) wiped away in one day.

A better tactic is to build up the search engine results positions of your interior pages as well. And by using complementary and supporting keyword phrases, you’ll also increase your chance of getting chosen for site-wide link results in Google.

** How do you increase the search engine rankings for your interior pages?

First, don’t ignore search engine optimization on your interior pages. It’s important to use proper title tags, header tags, body copy, etc on all of your web pages, not just your home page.

Secondly, concentrate on finding complementary keywords for your interior pages. Again, keywords aren’t something to be used only on the home page. You’ll need to analyze which keywords should be used for your interior pages as well, and then use these keywords in your on page and off page search engine optimization efforts.

Write blog posts for all of your keywords. Now that you know the various phrases and supporting terms you’d like to get ranked for, create several blog posts around those keywords.

Create interior link wheels. Once you’ve analyzed your keywords and created content for them, start linking them together to create a key wheel. It might be helpful to choose a champion page and concentrate on building up link juice for that page. And remember to use the keywords as your anchor text for all of your SEO link building activities.

Don’t forget your FAQs page, your Contact Us page and your Order Information page. These pages are often keyword goldmines that could easily be taken advantage of for SEO link building. When concentrating on SEO link building, don’t focus all your efforts on your home page. It’s important to build links to your interior pages as well. You need to spread your SEO equity amongst all the pages on your website.
